چکیده

The expressions for the turbulent pressure, equation of state and thermodynamic quantities taking account of turbulent pressure are derived in the framework of the mixing-length theory of convection. The numerical computations indicate that the turbulent pressure in the region close to the surface of a red giant or anAGB star can reach a value of 30-40 percent of the total pressure. A comparison of the evolution of a star with 7M from the zero-age main sequence to the AGB stage adopting turbulent pressure with that of the neglected turbulent pressure shows that the effect of turbulent pressure on the internal structure and evolution in the phase from the He-core burning stage to the AGB stage is significant. A similar investigation for the star of 2.8M shows that the effect of turbulent pressure on the internal structure in the same evolutionary phase is small. However, the effect of turbulent pressure on the evolutional track in the AGB phase is obvious.

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Lithium-rich Giants in Globular Clusters

Although red giants deplete lithium on their surfaces, some giants are Li-rich. Intermediate-mass asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars can generate Li through the Cameron–Fowler conveyor, but the existence of Li-rich, low-mass red giant branch (RGB) stars is puzzling. Globular clusters are the best sites to examine this phenomenon because it is straightforward to determine membership in the clus...

Mass Outflow and Chromospheric Activity of Red Giant Stars in Globular

High resolution spectra of 123 red giant stars in the globular cluster M13 and 64 red giant stars in M92 were obtained with Hectochelle at the MMT telescope. Emission and line asymmetries in Hα, and Ca II K are identified, characterizing motions in the extended atmospheres and seeking differences attributable to metallicity in these clusters and M15. On the red giant branch, emission in Hα gene...

Non - adiabatic Oscillations of Red Giants

Using our non-local time-dependent theory of convection, the linear non-adiabatic oscillations of 10 evolutionary model series with masses of 1–3M⊙ are calculated. The results show that there is a red giant instability strip in the lower temperature side of the Hertzsprung-Russel (HR) diagram which goes along the sequences of the red giant branch (RGB) and the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). For...

Spectroscopic binaries among Hipparcos M giants ⋆ III . The eccentricity - period diagram and mass - transfer signatures

Context. This paper is the third one in a series devoted to studying the properties of binaries involving M giants. Aims. We use a new set of orbits to construct the first (e− logP ) diagram of an extensive sample of M giant binaries, to obtain their mass-function distribution, and to derive evolutionary constraints for this class of binaries and related systems. Methods. The orbital properties...
